What is Mathematica?
Mathematica (published by Wolfram) is a fully integrated environment for technical computing, combining interactive calculation (both numeric and symbolic), visualization tools, and a complete programming environment. The Mathematica notebook interface provides an interactive technical document format which combines typeset mathematical expressions, formatted text, hypertext, and graphics, as well as fully customizable buttons and palettes. Mathematica also has a communications protocol named MathLink, which allows it to communicate and share data with other programs written in C, C++, and FORTRAN.
New Mathematica Installations
All current users at UVA can access Mathematica for installation on their personal or university owned computers. When you leave UVA you must delete Mathematica as the license is intended to only be used by active user during their time at UVA.
Instructions:
- Go to https://www.wolfram.com/siteinfo/
- Type in your computingID@virginia.edu email address and click Continue
- Click the link and fill out the Activation Key Request Form
- Click the “Product Summary page” link to access your license
- Click “Get Downloads” and select “Download” next to your platform
- Run the installer on your machine, and enter the Activation Key at prompt
Renewal of Mathematica License
Mathematica will require the user to obtain a new activation code every July directly from Wolfram to continue operation of their standalone copy. After the user has created a personal Wolfram account during their initial registration, the new activation code can be obtained through their Wolfram account during their time at UVA
Transferring a Mathematica License from one computer to another computer
Mathematica license owners can transfer their license to a new computer if their original computer gets replaced, or the motherboard on the same computer is replaced. To do this users need to request that Wolfram reset their Mathematica activation key by completing this form at Wolfram. Once the form is submitted the user should be able to reactivate their license on their new computer.
Other ways for students to use Mathematica at UVA
Mathematica is also available to students for homework via the Remote Apps.
Mathematica Network Version – for Labs and License Management use
This version requires the user to be on the UVA network or use the VPN client to use Mathematica. Please refer to this page for details on Connecting Mathematica to a Network License Server
Troubleshooting
Detailed installation instructions and troubleshooting information are available at Wolfram.

Wolfram Research’s Fast Introduction
Many useful documents in Mathematica’s notebook format (with .nb extension) are available on the Web and can be accessed from a Web browser by configuring the browser to use Mathematica as a helper application. Then the Web browser will start Mathematica automatically when you point to a Mathematica document. This assumes that Mathematica is available/installed on the same machine from which you are running the Web browser.
If users cannot find the answers to their questions in the online documentation, they can email their questions to Research Computing Support.
