Job summary
Bethany Mickel's work spans instruction both within and beyond the Teaching & Learning team, with a deep commitment to making learning affordable and accessible for all through her support of Open Educational Resources (OER) and open pedagogy initiatives. She brings the same passion to building Generative and Agentic AI literacy skills in students, helping them navigate an evolving information landscape with confidence and critical awareness. Across all of her instructional work, she leverages sound instructional design principles and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) frameworks to develop materials and learning objects that serve learners in synchronous, asynchronous, and hy-flex environments. Her research interests sit at the intersection of information and media literacy, open education, and AI literacy, with an ongoing curiosity about how these areas shape equitable access to knowledge. She is also interested in project-based learning as a meaningful alternative to traditional assessment in higher education, creating opportunities for students to demonstrate learning in authentic and creative ways.Bethany is an active collaborator across the Library and the broader university community, partnering with colleagues to advance shared goals in teaching, learning, and access. She also contributes her expertise at the state and national levels, serving on several committees dedicated to open education, information literacy, and the evolving role of AI in higher education.

Bethany has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania; a Master of Science degree in Instructional Technology from Bloomsburg University; and a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from Kent State University.
