Leo S. Lo is Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Advisor to the Provost for AI Literacy and Professor of Education (courtesy). A nationally recognized leader in higher education and libraries, he works at the intersection of knowledge, technology, and learning, with a focus on preparing individuals and organizations for an AI-embedded future.
Lo has held leadership roles at the University of New Mexico, Penn State University, the University of Alabama, and Kansas State University. He served as President of the Association of College and Research Libraries (2024–2025), where he launched the ACRL Task Force on AI Competencies for Library Workers. His research and writing explore AI literacy, organizational culture, professional development, and the future of work.
An interdisciplinary scholar, Lo holds an EdD from the University of Pennsylvania, an MFA in Screenwriting from Hollins University, an MLIS from Florida State University, an MA in Survey Research from the University of Connecticut, and a postgraduate diploma in Artificial Intelligence for Business from the University of Oxford Saïd Business School.
Lo is also an active public scholar and speaker. Over the past two years he has given more than 100 presentations across the United States and internationally, engaging audiences from universities, libraries, and policy organizations. His recent publications appear in The Conversation, The Guardian, and other venues. His forthcoming book, "AI and the Future Workforce: A Reskilling Guide for Academic Libraries" will be published by ACRL.
Outside of his professional work, Lo is an avid traveler and food enthusiast, with more than 120 visits to restaurants featured on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives since 2010. He is also a lifelong Arsenal supporter, following the football (soccer) club with the same dedication he brings to his work.
