When the Rotunda burned down in October of 1895, UVA officials immediately pushed to rebuild, and in 1896 the Board of Visitors hired prominent New York architects McKim, Mead & White. The firm went on to design many iconic buildings on Grounds, and those drawings are now available online in an easy-to-use format as part of the McKim, Mead and White architectural drawings collection.

The recently opened Edgar Shannon Library is busy and bustling, and the space is also enlivened by new art throughout the building. The art is part of the Art in Library Spaces (AiLS) initiative, designed to create inclusive artistic spaces for the University and Charlottesville communities and strengthen the UVA Library’s presence as a place of belonging for all.
After years of planning, renovation, and construction, UVA’s main library opened for business in January 2024 and celebrated a new era with a grand celebration and ceremony in early April in which the building was dedicated as The Edgar Shannon Library, named for UVA’s fourth president.
