This past June, we alerted Elsevier that we must reduce Purdue’s total spend on publications by $1.5M. This reduction is necessary due to the Libraries’ allocated budget and also reflects the need for more fair and equitable pricing. Purdue pays more for Elsevier subscriptions than many of our peer institutions, and our contracts are based on a complicated and archaic pricing strategy that favors Elsevier while hurting universities like Purdue.
While we are still out of contract, UC has resumed negotiations with the publisher in hopes of finally achieving a deal that provides for more open access publishing of UC research in Elsevier journals and restores UC’s access to the latest Elsevier journal articles on ScienceDirect.
Carla Arton is the Director of Technology Solutions at the University of Virginia Library. Her team of project managers, analysts and software engineers support library stakeholders in the research, adoption, and use of third-party applications to improve and enhance Library services and user experience. The University of Texas System has joined the Texas Library Coalition for United Action (TLCUA) to rethink how university libraries collectively can improve access to faculty research and to push for changes to the costly subscription models offered by publishers of academic journals. A total of 41 institutions in Texas have now joined the Coalition – including the 14 UT institutions – making it the largest and most diverse consortia of its kind and giving it significant negotiating power.
Accessioning Archivist collaborates with colleagues within the Library and the University to ensure appropriate and timely access to primary resource materials. This position is responsible for describing and facilitating access to newly acquired primary resource materials and works closely with staff engaged in this work.
As University Archivist, Lauren selects, transfers, describes and preserves materials of enduring value that document the history of the University of Virginia.
Amy works directly with UVA performing arts faculty and students to provide support for scholarship and creativity. This includes providing instruction sessions and workshops, and creating online guides and tutorials. She also offers individual research assistance to students and faculty, which includes providing consultations and supporting specialized collection development. Amy programs events, writes and administers grants, and collaborates with University units on projects.
